Endangered shark meat tainting Aussie fish and chip shops, marine experts warn
A new study shows 10 percent of shark meat sold in Australian fish shops and markets was endangered species, alarming conservation groups.
Sharks and rays are vulnerable to exploitation because of their long lifespans and low reproduction rate; much of these species’ essential habitats are not protected, particularly where they move between the coast and deep water during their lifecycle.
The Australian Marine Conservation Society’s Leonardo Guida told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons this lack of protection leads to the alarming levels of endangered animals being included in commercial fishing bycatch.
“Between the fisher, the processor, the wholesaler and eventually the consumer, you’ve got numerous opportunities for shark meat to enter the process, even if fishers are being very careful,” Mr Guida said.
