Asthma Australia is calling for a ban on installation of wood heaters in new homes in residential areas to clean up winter air and protect health.

Wood heater smoke is the largest source of winter air pollution according to the advocacy group, yet just 7% of Australian households use wood heaters as their main source of heating.

Asthma Australia Policy Manager Angela Cartwright told Millsy and Karl onĀ 6PR Breakfast when temperatures start to drop each year, they get a spike in asthma sufferers contacting them for help.

“We’ve done a national survey of 25,000 people which has shown the majority of the population don’t actually think wood heaters should be allowed in built-up areas,” Ms Cartwright said.
