Industry experts have warned Australian retailers to step up against online e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu.

Evan Lucas told Millsy & Karl on 6PR Breakfast, “It took 30 plus years for the consumer to make about 20% of their purchases on online channels. During COVID in that period of 2020, it jumped another 8% to 28%, and as of the end of last year… 36% of all of our purchases are now online.”

These platforms also raise questions about the ethical conditions of workers and the impacts on the environment due to a high product turnover at very low costs.

Evan Lucas suggested, “The amount of kilos of wastages of apparel products Australians use is the highest per capita in the world; it’s about 23 kilos.”
