Facial recognition technology is now being used at the Australian Open.

Gemma Grant, journalist at The Age, explains to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that patrons can use the technology for express entry, but it is also being used to monitor the general crowd.
“In the new terms of entry, if you step foot in Melbourne Park, you’re kind of agreeing to potentially being recorded by facial recognition technology,” she said.

Simon then spoke to Jeff Boehm, Chief Operating Officer at Wicket Software, about the software, who reassured listeners that the information collected is not shared with other organisations.

“Wherever there’s a queue, we can help speed that up, and that’s really the only place that technology’s being used,” he said.
