Fears of a coup in Solomon Islands after PM delays elections
There are concerns Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare is delaying his country’s elections due to Chinese influence.
Sogavare’s move is being described as an attempted coup against the Solomon Islanders, trying to turn his country into a clone of China by taking control of media, signing secret security deals, using bribery to change the constitution and preparing to instigate and crush dissent.
Cleo Paskal, non-resident senior fellow for the Indo-Pacific Foundation for Defense of Democracies spoke to 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett from Bangkok on Wednesday morning, as did the honourable Peter Kenilorea, a member of the Solomon Islands Parliament and well-respected opposition MP who was elected in 2019.
