The number of structure fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has increased at a rate which has caused dire concern for emergency services.

Thirty-two fires have been started by exploding lithium batteries, a number which dwarfs statistics from previous years.

DFES Chief Superintendent Peter Sutton told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings they’re urging people to take care with their appliances.

“We know that lithium-ion batteries are found in household items, and they’re almost like a blowtorch when they ignite,” Mr Sutton said.
