Footballers may be fined for taunting, if Eddie has his way

Furious comments made by Eddie McGuire on Footy Classified have raised debate on whether or not penalties should be applied for taunting in the AFL.

McGuire was specifically addressing the tension in Collingwood’s match-up against the Swans last weekend, in which Nick Daicos was targeted by multiple Sydney players – an issue which the former Collingwood president labelled as “pure bullying” and a “waste of time”.

Sports reporter Mark Readings told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the rule exists in other football codes, and there is precedent for updating the rulebook following specific incidents.

“We take a lot of our rules – the draft, the salary cap, et cetera – from American sport, but I’m not sure we need to go down this path,” Mr Readings said.
