From the Goldfields to WA’s first Indigenous Treasurer: Ben Wyatt’s story

Ben Wyatt is the second-youngest sitting parliamentarian and in 2017 was the first Aboriginal person to serve as a state or territory treasurer.

Touted as a future premier, he’s on the boards of blue-chip companies Rio Tinto and Woodside and is a board member of the West Coast Eagles.

Ben is a supporter of the Yes campaign and is this week’s guest on 6PR’s Backstories with Julie-anne Sprague.

Mr Wyatt said he’s frustrated that if Yes succeeds it won’t be an overwhelming win.

“I think every Australian accepts that we spend money poorly in Aboriginal affairs. We haven’t obviously convinced people that this will be a better outcome,” he said.

“If Yes is successful, the average Australian won’t see much change other than hopefully the taxpayer’s
dollars spent better.”

“For the small percentage of the population that are Aboriginal people, you will see better policy outcomes.”
