The founder of a popular social networking app has been taken to the Australian Human Rights Commission after using facial recognition software to prevent men who identify as women from joining.

Sall Grover, the founder of Giggle, has told Liam Bartlett from Mornings the whole point of the app is to create ‘a safe space for women’.

“For clarity, giggle is an app for women, otherwise known as female human beings, and the individual who is wanting to be on the app is a male individual,” she said.

Ms Grover said that the death threats and resulting actions from restricting the app to females only had reinforced its importance.

“What it actually does is prove our point. Every day it’s just proving this need to have important female spaces and keep them female-only,” she said.

“The anger that a lot of these males have of not being allowed to be on a female app proves the need for it and why we don’t want them there.”
