We’ve been told for a long time to avoid processed foods, but now experts are saying some favourites – like baked beans and fish fingers – are not so bad for us after all.

Ahead of the Naturally Good Summit in June,  Nutritionist and chief Healthylife dietitian Simone Austin told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast there’s a category of processed foods that shouldn’t be deemed as “unhealthy”.

“Things like confectionary, cakes and biscuits have added sugar and salt and fat, so the nutritional value’s gone down,” Ms Austin said.

“Something like baked beans, you can still see the main ingredient… you need some processing, but it’s the ultra-processed foods we could be eating less of.”
