There are whispers the ABC will have an acknowledgement of country broadcast at the start of every 7pm news bulletin, posing the question of whether it is being used too frequently and has lost its meaning.

WA Farmers Federation CEO Trevor Whittington told 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett the acknowledgement of country is being overused and forcing reconciliation without meaning.

“They risk losing it if we don’t have this conversation,” Whittington says.

“Let’s celebrate it for what is.”

He says instead of forcing the acknowledgement of country, companies should stand up for Indigenous people and share what they have done or achieved to get better outcomes for them.

“It’s like the ANZAC spirit … it’s slowly becoming who we are,” Whittington says.
