Home sweet crime: ABS reveals majority of vehicle thefts happen at residences
In 2022-23, figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that more than half of motor vehicle thefts and three-quarters of thefts from motor vehicles occurred at residential properties.
ABS Head of Crime and Justice Statistics William Milne told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons that the data demonstrates the amount motor vehicle thefts and crimes that were reported to police.
“Nationally, we are seeing a decline across most of our property crimes, including motor vehicle theft, theft from a motor vehicle, break-ins and malicious property damage. And it’s actually a very similar picture for WA, where we are seeing similar sorts of falls right across the board for all types of those household crimes,” Mr Milne said.
“Those are household crimes that are reported and not-reported to police, so that gives you the extent of the actual number of break-ins and motor vehicle thefts. It is a good story.”
