Hypersonic flight: Could a 2 hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles become reality?

A hypersonic flight experiment will launch tomorrow morning, potentially bringing superfast global travel closer to becoming a reality.

Chris James from the Centre for Hypersonics, School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering at the University of Queensland told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that several experiments occur when the flight takes off.

“They’re doing an experiment on the way up at about Mach 5, and then they’re doing a decent experiment,” he said.

“The rocket goes up to about 300 kilometres altitude in space, and then on the way back down, they’ll do a second experiment hopefully if all goes to plan.”

Chris James said they are quite far away from human-based hypersonic travel but that the science is there.

“I do hope in the next 10 or 20 years there are other companies making supersonic aircraft,” he said.

“What might more happen for hypersonic is you could launch say a package from Sydney to Los Angeles hypersonically.”
