International arrivals cap derailing ex-Commando’s attempts to come home

Australians stuck overseas want to see a cap on international arrivals lifted.

Only 75 people are permitted to arrive in Perth from overseas each day.

Stephen Spencer is a former Army commando and firefighter; his family have been living in Abu Dhabi but he was recently made redundant.

He says the varying rules between the Australian and UAE governments have made it near impossible for them to return home.

“In order… to return to Australia, I need to cancel their residency visas here, after which they then have 30 days to exit the country,” he told Gareth Parker on Mornings.

“Now we can’t get any economy or business class tickets to Perth for at least ten weeks.”
