Entertainment reporter Peter Ford has admitted he was “surprised” John Farnham decided to lend his song You’re the Voice to the Yes side in the leadup to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.

The decision has caused backlash for the legendary singer, with Ford stating “it has upset a lot of people”, but has been told there were no financial incentives for Farnham with using his song in the advertisement.

Uluru Dialogue Senior Engagement Officer Eddie Synot said Voice supporters have been more than clear and open about the gifting of the song to the campaign.

“I think we’d be naive to pretend that politics isn’t a part of this,” Synot said.

“I do commend people [like John Farnham] who have influence and use it to support things they believe in.”
