Is catching the ferry to work the answer to Perth’s congestion problems?

The WA Government has begun looking to secure funding from the Federal government to expand Perth’s limited ferry network ahead of the election.

Significant population growth in the Applecross area has led to increased traffic on local roads, leading to the State looking for a new ferry stop at Canning Bridge.

A sustainability expert has told 6PR Breakfast that he’s not confident it’s the answer to congestion problems.

Peter Newman, professor of sustainability at Curtin University, explained to Gareth Parker that he’s not optimistic that the new route and travel option would be valuable to the public.

“The river winds around all over the place, so it takes a long time to get anywhere rather than the direct A to B with a train or the highways, so it’s about speed, and people don’t want to waste time,” she said.

“I think we could probably get one around to the Crown area and maybe even over to UWA and down to Canning Bridge wouldn’t hurt, but there’s not many other options they’ve been tried over the years, and they don’t really work.”
