‘It’s just a pressure release’: Eagle Jake Waterman talks after his breakout performance
Eagles forward Jake Waterman is hopeful the team’s round two win over the Giants can be the catalyst for a resurgence back up the AFL ladder after breaking a nine-game losing streak.
The 24-year-old was among West Coast’s best players on the day, booting a career-high four goals, telling 6PR Football he found his rhythm in the first half.
“I had a little bit of a purple patch there in the second, and took a bit of confidence from that”
The 19-point victory was the Eagles’ biggest since round 19, 2021, as the team avoided extending their longest-ever losing streak.
“Just to get a win, to feel like it’s like again, hopefully, we can take a lot of confidence from this again and keep going forward.”
Waterman found himself in unfamiliar territory as he stepped into the backup ruck role, but says he did seek out injured star Nic Naitanui for advice pre-game.
“I’m undersized mate, I’m not going to be putting it down anyone’s throat but if I can at least get in there and make a contest and try follow up at ground level that’s my job”
Waterman also sang the praises of speedy backman Jamaine Jones who was prominent in the win.
“He’s shot out of a cannon mate… when the ball’s in his hands, he makes something happen”
