West Coast Eagles champion Glen Jakovich has spoken of his surprise at the news that Adam Simpson will continue on as the coach of the club.

Jakovich joined Adam Papalia on Wide World of Sports on Tuesday night and spoke strongly and passionately about the state of the club.

“The football department is a mess. It’s still a mess.”

Press PLAY to hear Jakovich’s full assessment following the announcement that Adam Simpson will remain senior coach.

Jakovich reflected on the club he knew, and where he sees the club now.

“I haven’t been close to the club for a while because your life goes in different directions. But one thing I’ve learned about my former football club is that they don’t blink, they don’t jump at shadows. They were strongly united. Really good people, really successful people in their own right.”

“Something has gone really wrong. I go back to the hub in Brisbane and they have not recovered from that hub. Players wanted this, wanted that.”

Jakovich was perplexed that Simpson retained his job given the club’s performances.

“Five wins in two years. It’s the great survival we’ve ever seen in world sport. Let alone our own sport”.

“Do you honestly think the football department is going to be winning games next year?”

Jakovich speculated at the reasons for the decision to retain Simpson, suggesting the coaching position isn’t the issue but rather, the football department.

“If we get rid of him, and we bring in a new coach, it’s a poisoned chalice for a new coach to walk into that mess. So they might as well deal with the devil that they know, than the one that they don’t know.”
