Former Nationals MP James Hayward has appeared in state parliament for the first time since he faced child sex abuse charges.

He made a brief appearance in the Legislative Council at around 8pm, where he walked into the chamber, nodded towards the President’s chair and left.

While Mr Hayward has resigned from the Nationals party, he has not resigned as a member of parliament.

He missed three consecution days of parliament last week without any request for leave.

Under the standing orders of parliament, he can miss up to six consecutive days before he must apply for leave.

If he doesn’t, he can be held in contempt of the parliament.

The brief appearance ensures that Mr Hayward keeps his seat and his salary until next year for at least ten weeks, as there are only five sitting days of parliament left.
