Jane’s savings story highlights cost-of-living pressures
Household budgets are expected to take another hit when interest rates rise again on Tuesday, on the back of massive price rises for groceries and petrol as inflation levels skyrocket.
With cost-of-living pressures showing no signs of easing, Health Services Union secretary Naomi McCrae told Gary Adshead, in for Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings, a stop-work meeting of all health services workers tomorrow regarding was in response to pay conditions in the WA state budget that don’t add up.
“It’s a big deal to walk off the job, it’s a very big deal to take that step, it’s because of the lack of any response from the government that we’re going to do it,” she said.

6PR Mornings caller Jane, a public sector worker, told Adshead while she should be grateful for any pay increase, she was “not one of the big wigs” and she was finding it difficult to “make ends meet”.
“It’s been incredibly challenging, recently we had our hot water system pack in… and that was $7000, and you’re just like ‘ok, well there goes a lot of savings’,” she said.
“We actually had to help for a little bit of help from our in-laws and then it’s like, gosh, what’s next?”
