Josh Frydenberg says WA ‘powerhouse’ will no longer be ‘short-changed’ with GST fix
Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has said that the government has made hard decisions to ensure the GST is suitable for Western Australia.
Speaking to Mark Gibson on 6PR Breakfast, the Treasurer and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party said they had recognised WA’s vital role in its contribution to the economy.
“We’ve got a very strong story to tell. WA has been a big part of that. You’re a powerhouse here and, of course not just in the resources sector but also in the agriculture sector and in innovation more generally,” he said.
Mr Frydenberg spoke about the Coalition’s role in keeping the GST right for the state.
“It’s been a Coalition government – that has delivered a revolutionary reference to the GST to ensure people in Western Australia are no longer short-changed,” he said.
“It just wasn’t right that people of Western Australia could get as low as 30¢ in the dollar, whereas now, with us, you’re getting 70¢ in the dollar, $5.9 billion of GST revenue flowing to people of WA this year.”
In a wide-ranging interview, the Treasurer spoke to 6PR Breakfast about:
- Fuel excise cut and how diesel vehicles are being affected
- Aged care wage promises
- Western Australian election seats under pressure
- Confirmation of the Federal Election date is ‘imminent’
