The Opposition is yet to decide if it will support tougher immigration detention laws to put some freed asylum seekers, back into custody as pressure increases on the Albanese government’s “chaotic” handling of the High Court’s immigration decision.

More than 140 asylum seekers have been released into the community, after the High Court ruled indefinite detention is unlawful; two have since been charged with separate crimes.

Opposition Immigration Spokesperson Dan Tehan told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings he believes the process of dealing with released criminals was botched from the start.

And that’s why they need to do the honourable thing and resign if the government wants to restore faith with the Australian people that they can keep the community safe,” Mr Tehan said.
