There are many reasons a child should learn a musical instrument. Not only does it give them the opportunity to make music, a significant body of research points to benefits for cognitive and academic achievement.

Tim McKenry, a professor of music, spoke to 6PR Afternoons host Julie-anne Sprague on the benefits of picking up an instrument. 

“There’s never a wrong time to start learning a musical instrument, but kids in primary school and as young as possible can really benefit,” he said.
