Local campaign to welcome displaced Ukrainian families to Perth
Displaced Ukrainian families who have relocated to Perth to escape the war will be welcomed as part of a local community event on the weekend.
Around 100 Ukrainian families have moved to Perth as part of Australia’s refugee intake, where they will be settled in the northern suburbs.
The conflict has displaced around 7.1 million Ukrainians, according to the UN.
To date, around 6000 Ukrainians have arrived in Australia.
On Saturday, there will be a fundraising event to welcome Perth’s newest residents at The Square Mirrabooka.
The event is being run by Fawkner Property’s The Square Mirrabooka, with the support of the City of Stirling and the Ukrainian Association of WA.
Fawkner Property founder Chris Garnaut told Gareth Parker they’ve left their homes with little more than a suitcase.
“The basis of the campaign is three fold, one is to welcome the displaced Ukrainians,” he said.
“They are coming at a rapid rate of knots, our thesis is one to raise money for these displaced Ukrainians who have come on a humanitarian visa, two and more importantly, make them feel as though they are part of Australia.
“What you’ve got is women and children, who have arrived with a suitcase.
“This like World War 2 refugees, you’ve got these people who are arriving here virtually with nothing.”
Funds raised at the event will be donated to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
