City of Fremantle councillor Adin Lang is calling for better control of local cat laws.

In 2019, a report by the state government recommended to confine domestic cats to household premises.

Since then, councils in Wanneroo, Bayswater, Kwinana, Gosnells, Vincent, Cockburn and Fremantle have moved to enact different local laws to contain cats to the home.

But the government has been reluctant to follow suit, pushing against local government motions.

City of Fremantle councillor Adin Lang has been advocating to control the feral cat population around Fremantle and is bemused by the mixed government messaging.

“I definitely understand that cats are a really important companion animal for a lot of people,” he said.

“Your cat is safer when you are at home.”
