Papua New Guinea has been rocked by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in the early hours of the morning.

The quake was at a depth of 80 kilometres, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

Northern Papua New Guinea resident at the Wiomungu Aid Post told 6PR Breakfast the quake shook buildings violently in the area.
