Mayor says councillor’s viral outburst has hurt City’s reputation
A childish, desk-banging outburst during a local council meeting broadcast on Zoom has damaged the administration’s reputation after it went viral overnight.
Cambridge councillor Rod Bradley’s outrageous 10-minute tirade, first played on 6PR Breakfast yesterday, came after a last-minute request to discuss an invoice towards the end of the four-hour meeting.
He later responded to the outburst to host Gareth Parker (listen below) to give his side of the story.
“The urgent matter, and I’m not supposed to be telling you this, was to pay one bill,” Cr Bradley said.
On Wednesday, Mayor Keri Shannon, who was forced to deflect much of the councillor’s angst, told Gareth Parker the fact his outburst had gained national media attention was not a good outcome for the City.
“It’s completely unfortunate and it’s not appropriate … I’m concerned it might be resulting from the pressure of running for the candidacy,” she said.
Cr Bradley, who has sat on the Cambridge council since 2003, is running for the seat of Swan for the WA Party in the upcoming federal election.
The Local Government Standards Panel found he had breached rules of conduct with “offensive and objectionable” behaviour towards a former Cambridge councillor during and after a 2018 meeting.
