McGowan backs Skyshow event as WA records 24 new COVID cases
WA Premier Mark McGowan stands by his decision to back a fireworks display for Australia Day.
The medical community here and interstate agree a closed border with Omicron in the community makes no sense if large-scale events like the Skyworks can continue.
The Premier’s comments came at a press conference where he announced another 24 COVID-19 cases had been recorded overnight, with nine from the greater Bunbury region and the remainder across the Perth metro area.
Mr McGowan said all of the cases from the South West are linked to the Albemarle Kemerton lithium plant, a 90-hectare construction site.
The recent cases, who are all vaccinated, bring the number of people linked to the Bunbury outbreak to 17.
Mr McGowan also said West Australians can get a third COVID-19 vaccination three months after their second dose, as of Monday.
On Monday, the City of Perth backtracked on plans to have Department of Health marshals spot-checking people’s vaccination status at the outdoor event, which usually attracts 250,000 people to Swan River foreshores and Kings Park.
Police Minister Paul Papalia said there was no obligation for outdoor events to have proof-of vaccination requirements.
Earlier, Public Transport Authority spokesperson David Hynes told Liam Bartlett’s 6PR Mornings program those travelling to the event via Transperth services must wear masks or face being kicked off.
