Medicare fraud scandal costing taxpayers billions of dollars a year
There are calls for a Royal Commission into Medicare as doctors are accused of billing dead people and falsifying patient records to boost profits.
A joint Nine newspapers-ABC investigation has uncovered flaws in the system, making it easy to rort and almost impossible to detect incorrect payments and errors.
Adele Ferguson, Investigative reporter SMH & The Age, told Gareth Parker that the Medicare system had been abused.
“One of the problems is Medicare was set up in the 80s as an honour system that doctors will bill correctly,” she said.
“They don’t know how much is fraud, and how much is mistakes and how much is overservicing,
“But in the end, it doesn’t matter because it’s money that should be going somewhere else.”
