UPDATE: The WA Director General of Education has concurred with reports of out-of-control violence in the state’s schools, admitting the sector is reaching a crisis point.

Lisa Rodgers told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings the issues facing schools are unprecedented, and have schools scrambling to retain staff.

“We’re never going to turn a child away, but we need to make sure our schools are safe places and our teachers aren’t under attack,” she said.

School principals are increasingly facing threats of violence, with about half planning to quit or retire early and WA principals reporting bullying as their most concerning problem.

Australian Catholic University survey interviewed 2,300 school principals around the country, revealing two-thirds of all principals had also been threatened by parents and carers.

Australian Catholic University senior lecturer Paul Kidson told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast

“Particularly when you get a parent or a caregiver who just refuses to believe that their child may or may not done something; there’s an unreasonableness often given by those caregivers,” Mr Kidson said.
