There is currently a shortage of IV fluids here in WA but it’s now morphine – vital in easing the suffering of palliative care patients – that’s also low in supply.

The update comes after 6PR Perth Live host Oliver Peterson exclusively revealed doctors, nurses and Perth Children’s Hospital clinical staff were emailed that IV stock levels were now at critical shortage levels.

“The drug company has decided for commercial reasons to withdraw these drugs (morphine) from the Australian market… if that happens there’s a substitute medication…in this case the substitute is not available,” Australian & New Zealand Society for Palliative Care chief executive Joe Hooper told 6PR Mornings host Gary Adshead.
