One in three students are failing to meet national literacy and numeracy standards. while one in ten need extra support to meet requirements.

Indigenous, rural and students of lower economic status are suffering even more, according to revamped criteria for this year’s national test.

Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority CEO David de Carvalho there are many schools who “punch above their weight” and should be used as test cases for future implementation.

“Particularly in the early years they have a strong focus on phonics; evidence-based teaching practices which could be scaled up; and small-group tutoring would all make a difference,” Mr de Carvalho said.
