‘Not criminals:’ Legitimate firearm owners appealing WA Firearms Act Reform
The WA Firearms Act Reform entered parliament in February, looking to set some of the toughest laws in the country. These laws mean WA would become the first state to limit the number of firearms owned, enforce stricter licensing and mental health checks.
In response, a petition has been created by the WA Firearms Community Alliance receiving over 30,000 signatures in less than 30 days.
Spokesman Paul Fitzgerald told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live there are people with a genuine need for firearms. He said sports people, recreational users and ethical hunters who are all from a known responsible community shouldn’t be punished.
“Firearm owners in Western Australia are not criminals, what we’ve seen from the WA Labour Government is the framing up of a problem that doesn’t exist,” Fitzgerald said.
