A recent census has revealed that the Greater Bilby – one of the most critically endangered species in Australia – is making a comeback, with numbers doubling since last year according to current estimates.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy Field Ecologist Phoebe Dickins told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings the Greater Bilby population has reached at least 3,315 nationally, a marked increase than previous years.

The primary West Australian bilby sanctuary at Mount Gibson has seen numbers increase from 56 to about 1,770 – the largest population in a AWC sanctuary.

“It’s a very exciting estimate, and a significant increase form the 56 who were initially introduced here between 2016 and 2018,” Ms Dickins said.
