Parents accused of neglect over baby’s death
A Collie mother and father have appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Friday charged with neglecting their six-month-old baby boy after he died in hospital on Wednesday.
Child abuse squad detectives charged Maraea Te Oke Mae Hunia, 31, and Jahley Poata, 30, on Thursday after their baby, named Jahley after his father, was admitted to Collie Hospital on September 26 before being transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital due to his poor health, however he died there on October 5.
His parents are each charged with one count of having the care and control of a child and engaging in conduct knowing that conduct may result in harm to the child.
In court, prosecutors alleged the parents failed to provide medical, therapeutic or remedial treatment to the baby between June 1 and September 27.
