People from far and wide descend on Guildford every night to gather around a fire, slurp famous pea and ham soup and chow down on burgers that former Masterchef judge Matt Preston once declared were the “best ever.”

Late night haunt Alfred’s Kitchen celebrates its 75th birthday later this month, making them the oldest burger joint in the state.

Family owner Daniel Lawrence told Jane Marwick everyone has a story about eating at Alfred’s.

“Being there for that long, there’s a lot of nostalgic value for a lot of people,” he said.

“We’ve just tried to do the same thing for all these years and not try and change it.”

Alfred’s will be celebrating on Monday September 27 by offering customers a free cup of pea and  ham soup to go with their burger.
