Perth heatwave: Frustration grows as hundreds left without power
Around 1000 homes across Perth are still stuck without any power, with some residents experiencing outages for several days.
According to their website, Western Power is currently dealing with 57 outages across Perth.
There is still no clear timeline for restoration for some frustrated customers, due to fire risks and soaring temperatures.
Western Power’s head of network maintenance Zane Christmas says the hot weather’s also to blame for the system overloading in the first place.
“We’ve still got 4000 customers off across the metro mainly, so that’s better than it was last night there was 11,000 off last night so it’s getting better as you said there are [57] outages scattered around,” he told 6PR Breakfast.
“And you’re right, some people have been off for a long time, mainly load related at the moment and obviously the heat and fire danger index is making it difficult to get them back on.”
He admitted it could be some time before customers see their power restored, as temperatures are due to soar to 39 degrees today.
Customers could be entitled to $80 extended outage service standard payment.
Summer breakfast host Mark Gibson said it wasn’t good enough and pushed for compensation for affected customers.
“That’s not good enough, saying $80 might not cover it but that’s the best we can do, it’s not good enough.”
6PR caller Kim, who is in Scarborough, said she had been without power for 3 days.

Energy Minister Bill Johnston apologised for those impacted by the power outages.
“Unfortunately when it’s really hot, you are more likely to have mechanical failures, and almost every single one of these outages have been because of a mechanical failure,” he explained on 6PR Mornings.
“Unfortunately it’s just a fact that when it’s really hot, you have more of those mechanical failures.”
He said he will order an independent review into the outages.
