Flight shaming – the next threat to tourism
According to a recent report from Tourism WA, the number of international visitors have declined and there’s a new movement that could affect WA tourism even more. Flyskam, the new Swedish term for being ashamed to fly because of its impact on the environment, has people questioning whether they need to fly at all.
In addition to this, Qantas has seen a 15% increase in carbon offsets from passengers. So it seems passengers are concerned about their carbon footprint when flying.
Deputy Asia Editor at Flight Global Ellis Taylor told Oliver Peterson there’s still an appeal to holiday in Perth but it’s too early to tell if passengers are put off by this.
“If it does get to that point, what we’ll start to see is airlines looking at more eco-friendly options for people.”
