Kids Have Lost The Passion For Writing

NAPLAN results show a decline in kids’ ability to write.

Today Ed Creely, a Lecturer in Literacy and English Education from Monash University, spoke to Oliver Peterson about how our kids need more writing for pleasure rather than forms of writing focused on standardised testing.

“A lot of the curriculum policy and framework that is driving what’s happening in classrooms has narrowed in their focus on particular types of writing and they’ve linked it to tests such as NAPLAN.”

Parents can encourage children to write for pleasure by giving them a personal diary or journal to write about life, what interests them, or for imagining, storytelling and wondering.
