McKechnie legislation an “extreme step”

Oliver Peterson

A Senior Politics Lecturer at Notre Dame University believes the State Government is taking an ‘extreme step’ in order to have the Corruption and Crime Commission boss re-instated.

John McKechnie is facing the end of his term. A Joint Standing Committee to reappoint him decided against it by one vote.

The State Government is blaming the Opposition for blocking and will now attempt to push through legislation to hasten Mr McKechnie’s reappointment.

Dr Martin Drum says the bill is unnecessary.

“The best solution is for it to go back to the committee and the committee to reexamine that recommendation.

“It’s a pretty extreme step to actually introduce new legislation that over rides an existing process under the Act.”
