Playgrounds safe to open, no evidence of transmission outside: expert

A University of Queensland virologist says while intrastate travel borders should be lifted, travel between the states and territories should be controlled for a little longer.

There’s calls – mostly from the business and tourism sectors – to reopen interstate travel, to get the economy moving again.

But Professor Ian MacKay told Gareth Parker on Mornings no one wants to see cases rise, as a result of opening the borders.

Meanwhile with the resumption of our major sporting codes within weeks, Professor MacKay says restrictions on sport like other restrictions – need to be eased gradually to see if it results in new cases.

He also says no evidence has been uncovered to suggest playgrounds should still be shut.
