SAT to crackdown on MP allowances… in 2021

The Salaries and Appeals Tribunal will unveil a new system next year aimed at making political entitlements and allowances more transparent and accountable.

The SAT was already in the process of reviewing the current system when the Corruption and Crime Commission launched an investigation ultimately calling for an overhaul.

There are questions around whether or not MPs’ $78,000 annual allowance should be treated as ‘extra’ salary or not.

SAT Chair Professor Margaret Seares told Gareth Parker they’re looking toward a register to force MPs to detail what the money is spent on.
