Telcos ordered to crackdown on scammer mobile number porting

The Federal Government has ordered all telcos to introduce two factor authentication by the end of April in a bid to reduce fraudulent porting of mobile numbers.

Scammers looking to carry out ID theft have been able to easily control mobile numbers by ‘porting’ from one telco to another – with minimal details.

Some telcos have already introduced two factor authentication – Vodafone has reduced fraud by 97 percent since March.

Federal Communications Minister Paul Fletcher told Gareth Parker mobile phone numbers have become a key part of a person’s identity.
