WA first coronavirus confirmed

Gary Adshead

WA has its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

A 78-year-old West Australian man tested positive to COVID-19 in Darwin, where he had been transferred after being onboard the Diamond Princess cruise in Japan.

Today he’ll be transferred to Perth in a Royal Flying Doctor Service jet and will receive treatment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

The man was travelling with his wife, who has returned a negative result.

She’ll fly back to Perth with him but will be quarantined.

WA Health insists there is no threat to the public and the correct protections are in place to ensure the safety of hospital staff, and anyone else the patient may encounter during his flight from Darwin.
