WA school kids are missing out on vital play-based learning

Today the State School Teachers’ Union WA (SSTUWA) launched its Play is Learning Campaign to call on the Government to secure all early childhood students’ (kindy – year 2) right to access play-based learning in WA.

SSTUWA commissioned first of its kind research into the damage formal, structured education is doing to our youngest school kids.

Murdoch University early childhood teaching expert Dr Sandra Hesterman lead the research and she told Karl O’Callaghan that children learn best through play.

“Research shows play enables children to develop holistically.

“What that means is that play supports their social and emotional well being, their language and physical development, their cognitive thinking and their creativity.”
