What’s the problem with paying for shopping centre parking?

From this week Westfield Carousel staff will be charged $3 a day to park at their workplace, while shoppers will get the first three hours free.

The introduction of paid parking prompted hundreds of protesters to gather outside the shopping centre, in opposition.

Whiles Premier, Mark McGowan agreed the charge is an unfair additional cost to workers, Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) WA Secretary, Peter O’Keefe claims the State Government is repsonsible for “forcing” Westfield’s hand.

“The policy that was bought into effect in 2016 under the former State Government makes it very clear that if you want to get a development application through, you’re going to have to introduce paid parking,” Mr O’Keefe said.

He spoke with Chris about the reasons he opposes paying for parking at shopping centres.
