As a 16-year-old detainee of Banksia Hill’s notorious Unit 18 remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital, Corrective Services Minister Paul Papalia has refused to acknowledge any legal implications to the unit’s processes.

Mr Papalia has been busy discussing the State Government’s planned gun reforms, but controversy continues to surround the often 23-hour confinement juveniles face in Unit 18.

“I’m not going to get into the details of a specific case,” Mr Papalia said.

“But here’s the thing; anyone in Unit 18 is there because they are a complex, challenging and often dangerous individual. They’re the ones responsible for more than 45o assaults on staff while in Banksia Hill.”
