Push for nuclear power transition grows – but is it worth it?
Peter Dutton has thrown his support behind transitioning Australia’s ageing coal power plants to nuclear facilities, but the jury’s out on whether or not it would actually be worthwhile.
Curtin University Sustainable Energy Systems researcher Liam Wagner told Mick and Gena on 6PR Breakfast he found the use of nuclear power as a political talking point laughable.
“This is something that’s constantly proposed, but really there has to be quite a considerable effort to get that technology into our energy system,” Associate Professor Wagner said.
“To be frank with you, the system is just too expensive to even consider now.”
