WA Member of Parliament Pierre Yang has moved to ban the use of the word “Chinaman” in place names across the state in an effort to remove historically racist connotations.

There remains a number of historically significant places in WA that, despite any potential connection to the long and storeyed history of Chinese people in WA, are associated with derogatory views.

Chung Wah Association of WA historical advisor Kaylene Poon told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings the historical associations between Australia and China have always had to find context, especially in permanent place names.

“It has all sorts of negative connotations… it’s tied into stereotypes that continue to cause a lot of issues,” Ms Poon said.
