According to the Bureau of Statistics, an army of Australian workers over the age of 65 are marching back to work, pushing the number of pensioners employed beyond pre-pandemic levels.

Breaking the record with 689,000 pensioners employed around Australia, the pandemic, labor shortages and an increase in the amount a pensioner can earn are all contributing factors.

Ian Henschke, Chief Advocate for National Seniors Australia, told 6PR Afternoons host Jo McManus that Australia should stop looking to overseas workers to fill the labor shortage.

“You are not going to be getting these people to somehow magically fulfill these jobs, why wouldn’t you say to an old Australian who wants to keep working, that they can keep working and they can keep their pension but will be taxed,” Mr Henschke said.
